Recurring Painful Lumps in the Armpits or Groin: Could It Be Hidradenitis?

A lump that settles and then returns in the same area can make clothing and movement uncomfortable. If this happens in your armpits or groin, it is worth asking a dermatologist about hidradenitis suppurativa, or HS. This guide supports timely assessment; it is not a way to diagnose yourself from a few symptoms.

How is it different from an ordinary boil?

HS is a long-term inflammatory skin condition. It is not ordinary acne, is not contagious and is not caused by poor hygiene. Deep, painful lumps in skin folds, together with recurrence, drainage, scars or tunnels beneath the skin, raise suspicion. However, boils, ingrown hairs and other conditions are also possible. An examination matters.

When should you seek help?

Arrange assessment for lumps that repeatedly return to the same area, leave scars or cause persistent wounds; do not wait for severe disease. Seek same-day medical advice for a new lump that is very painful, hot or red, or for fever, chills or spreading redness or swelling. Not every pus-filled lump is HS, and infection can develop alongside it.

What can you do while waiting?

  • Do not squeeze or pierce lumps, or scrub the skin with a brush or rough cloth.
  • Wear soft, loose clothing. Avoid waxing or shaving that injures inflamed skin.
  • For comfort, hold a clean, warm—not hot—cloth against the area for about ten minutes.
  • Ask your clinician which dressing to use for draining wounds and how often to change it. Home care does not replace treatment.

What should you bring to your appointment?

Note when the problem began, which areas are affected, how often it returns, previous medicines and how pain affects sleep or work. Dated photographs can help show changes between visits; do not share intimate photographs on social media. You should not feel embarrassed about explaining the impact on everyday life.

Is treatment just antibiotics?

No. Depending on severity, care may include topical or oral medicines, wound care and sometimes biologic medicines or procedures. The aim is to reduce flares and pain and limit further damage; a guaranteed outcome cannot be promised. Treatment suitability and availability in Kabul must be checked individually.

Frequently asked questions

Will more washing solve it?

No. HS is not a sign of uncleanliness, and harsh scrubbing can make it worse.

Is every armpit lump HS?

No. Location, appearance and recurrence history must be considered alongside an examination.

Is laser always necessary?

No. Laser hair removal may help selected patients, but its suitability and safety should be assessed after diagnosis.
